Flame / Smoke Artist
FreelanceFlame / Smoke Artist
Feb. 2012 - Jun. 2012Hollywood, CADuties at CBS Digital in Hollywood included remastering Star Trek TV shows on Flame from original 35mm film. As VFX Editor running Flame Premium by Autodesk, I had to locate, re-assemble ("conform") and sync all shots in each episode before distributing shots and elements to other Flame artists who completed ("composited") newly-remastered visual effects shots which I replaced in the timeline before sending completed episodes to our colorist for a final pass, delivering to 4K UHD Blu-ray and other platforms. It was fun and inspiring to work with a lot of talented people - Lustre and Da Vinci colorists who also re-scanned the original 35mm reels using a Spirit data telecine, Flare, Smoke and Flame artists, producers and editors. Seth MacFarlane is a major Star Trek fan and stopped by one night while I was working on the show. He was pretty psyched, really nice guy too. He shook my hand and thanked me. The whole team really kicked butt. Good times making classic TV digital masterpieces. Other than Star Trek I worked as an Editor in a different room using Smoke (Smoke Advanced by Autodesk). I removed some classic commercials (with doctors promoting cigarettes among others), synced and edited final remastered tracks and helped deliver entire seasons of Bonanza, Rawhide, The Streets of San Francisco and Perry Mason, all originally shot on 35mm as well.

Jan. 2002 - Dec. 2003Huntington Beach, CADirector – "Making The Call: Big Waves of the North Pacific" (documentary film) Created an educational action sports DVD from concept to delivery. Goal: to entertain, educate and promote. Documented big wave surfing (Cortes Bank, Hawaii, NorCal, Mexico) and interviewed big wave surfers with Steve Hawk and a Sony DSR-500 camera. Wrote contracts, treatments, outlines, and storyboards; led and managed a production team; created “revolutionary animations” with Autodesk Flame to show how wave energy interacts with the topography of the ocean floor to create giant waves; produced soundtrack; edited, mixed and finished with Autodesk / Discreet non-linear tools; coordinated and directed DVD production and delivery. Premiered on the North Shore & Huntington Beach AMC on the mainland. "MAKING THE CALL is fantastic, packed with more information about big waves and how they are formed than 50 years of surf movies, magazines and books combined." - Sam George, Editor, SURFER Surfline merged with Swell in 2000. Pioneered a Web Video Channel as a one person video department and then migrated completely to Surfline in Huntington Beach for office move #7 after Swell dissolved around 2002. Surfline.com is the most popular wave forecasting company on the planet. January 19, 2001 - (Cortes Bank, 108 miles west of San Diego) - After waiting ten years for glassy yet massive conditions, Larry "Flame" Moore (R.I.P.) and Surfline Founder Sean Collins got their 'perfect storm' over 100 miles at sea at underwater seamount Cortes Bank. Video Director
Swell.comVideo Director
Jan. 2000 - Dec. 2002San Francisco / San ClementeShort story about a dot com startup called Swell... I ran into Steve Hawk one day at a coffee shop in late 1999 while visiting my girlfriend in Carlsbad. Hawk and I had worked together four years in a row putting together the first Surfer Magazine Video Awards shows, which went over pretty well. He asked me if I wanted to move to San Francisco, said he was moving his whole family for the gig. It was a tough call. I'd just made senior artist rate after paying the dues a couple of years freelancing at The WB in Burbank (on Hal and Flame). We had a meeting which lasted about 2 minutes, and then we went surfing. I took the gig. Hire #4. It was my first staff job and it was swell ;) We received a Webby Award in 2001 for "Best Sports Website" over ESPN and CBS Sports. Before that happened Hawk surfed Antarctica, I shot Mike Parsons riding a 66-foot wave in the middle of the ocean, Rob Machado winning the Pipe Masters, Mavericks at 80 feet...many stories impossible to describe here. The company expanded to 110 employees and merged with Surfline. I created a video department and later a video channel at Surfline which peaked at 2 million unique visitors a year. Unfortunately, it was before people knew how to monetize traffic. We started a new awards show, the XXL Awards. I documented legendary surf sessions, including that first 60+ foot surf session in the middle of the ocean at Cortes Bank (100 miles west of San Diego). I learned a lot from the wave forecasters and decided to use flame to translate the science into visuals that would make it easier for people to understand (see Surfline job position).
