Jul. 2019 - Feb. 2020Eastern Caribbean · On-siteAlannah Johnson began working in St. Vincent and the Grenadines as a Peace Corps Volunteer on August 23, 2019. She was assigned to the Colonarie Primary School as a Primary English Literacy Teacher to develop and support a number of literacy-focused initiatives.
She designed student-centered reading intervention programs to support grade 1 – 3 students through small group instruction. Approximately 80% of these students demonstrated growth on the Eastern Caribbean Basic Literacy Assessment (ECBLA). She also developed individualized remedial literacy tutoring sessions for 23 grade 3-6 students who were testing well below their grade level, and she reported that all of them demonstrated improved reading abilities. Her training included: 215 hours of Literacy and Education training
38 hours of training on how to live and work well in the culture of SVG
35 hours of language training (Vincentian Creole)
18 hours of Intercultural Competence, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
28 hours of how to maintain personal health in SVG
17 hours of how to stay safe in SVG, including preparing for and dealing with natural disasters
Sessions on Monitoring, Reporting and Evaluation of Volunteer Project activities, outputs and outcomes. Ms. Johnson addressed the school’s expressed need for more extra-curricular activities by establishing a
Computer Math Lab with fun interactive math activities for grades 2-6. She also mentored a teacher to
plan and carry out the school’s first Reading Club for advanced grade 3 readers, who shared information
about books, practiced public speaking, completed book projects, developed creative expression, and
participated in a book competition (a Bookopoly board game) created and facilitated by Ms. Johnson.
