Mar. 2019Kenosha, WII continue to collaborate with colleagues formerly of GS Marketing Group (GSMG)—at times leading a given project, at times supporting their work. Together, we form a right-sized and able virtual team of peers that spans digital and print spaces. In the first year of SMBworks, I conducted a series of Facebook Ads campaigns for a client new to the platform, yielding high engagement—including an employment ad campaign that accomplished its goal well ahead of schedule, while also building an enthusiastic audience. I've custom-targeted audiences and run campaigns for other clients, as well, either independent of or paired with search campaigns. My design and development team supports an agency that serves national and international brands, demonstrating their value to those brands (and, in turn, reinforcing our value to the agency) and led to increased investment in email marketing campaigns. From time to time, we'll create display ads and landing pages, as the client has need. A manufacturing client wanted to extend an award-winning web application my team at GSMG built for them in 2017, and I developed an API to share the web app's database their first mobile app. As of December 2021, the combined web/mobile app is nearing 3,000 registered users. I helped another manufacturing client organize several sources of product information into a single database they can maintain online. It has the ability to export price lists of about 2,500 SKUs for their distributors—and for their own sales team's use. These are just some highlights and touch on accomplishments. What is even more rewarding is the day-to-day interaction with these clients and collaborators.

Apr. 2003 - Feb. 2019Kenosha, WII joined GS Marketing Group (GSMG) as the tech-focused partner, as the others specialized in marketing and sales. I continued work on direct mail portals, including assuming responsibility for running DevOps for one such portal with $10+ million in sales and 28+ million pieces mailed per year. That earned me a project management role in an even larger job that involved integrating four enterprise-scale systems. When not writing code or requirements documents, I learned more of the marketing side of the business by doing. I found a niche in writing press releases (thanks, in no small part, to my high school yearbook adviser's encouragement to learn AP Style). I picked up other writing assignments for clients, and either wrote or edited content for GSMG. We had a combination kitchenette and photo studio in the back of the building, where I would take the occasional product photo. I even cooked for a few lunch meetings with clients. Everyone in the building enjoyed when I baked cookies on-site, which may or may not have had something to do with how often we had guests.

Aug. 1998 - Apr. 2003I sort of stumbled into entrepreneurship. (That's pretty common, isn't it?) An alumna of my high school was featured in the local paper for setting up her first website—a directory of classmates—and I wrote her with an offer to help. She introduced me to two of her brothers and before I knew it, I had started a new freelance development company with a handful of clients. Eighteen months after leaving grad school in Manhattan, Kansas, I made my first visit to a client in, well... that other Manhattan. Early on, I specialized in UI design and development, flexing my JavaScript skills to make the pages of clients' websites come to life with engaging interactivity. Soon I was building JavaScript object data stores that could be loaded to and manipulated in the browser (about the time AJAX was taking shape). As the need for server-side development arose, I prototyped a direct marketing portal for a name-brand insurance company, presenting just three days after getting introduced to the project—and learning ASP as I went. That led to more of the same kind of work for other insurance and financial services enterprises. Meanwhile, I also seized the opportunity to build and maintain an intellectual property management portal for a manufacturing company with users around the globe. It came to span the entire IP lifecycle, including the opportunity for any employees to submit ideas for new products that then could be patented. One fun project of my own was a tool that would ask the user for a set of keyword lists. It then queried an online thesaurus for synonyms and ran permutations among the lists, also querying Google Ads (formerly AdWords) to find and rank long-tail keyword phrases that could save advertisers money while also increasing click-through.
