Feb. 2020Halifax, Nova Scotia, CanadaI am the mom in the mom-and-son team responsible for creating the world's first location-aware audio-based tour guide app utilizing text-to-speech and voice recognition software for an accessible, safe driving experience, with associated searchable database infrastructure to provide unique localized tourism experience for travellers in selected global tourism markets. In the three years since we started we have now tested and illustrated our app in 53 countries and have made improvements and enhancements we didn't remotely imagine when we started. The more we use it; the more feedback we get, the more the ideas come about how it can be used far more broadly than just the chatterbox with local knowledge that I had originally hoped for.

Conflict Resolution Coach and Mediator
COACH - MEDIATOR - FACILITATORConflict Resolution Coach and Mediator
Sep. 2010Halifax, Nova ScotiaMy work as a conflict management coach and mediator is anchored in many years of working in highly adverse labour relations environments and political volatility. I shifted from the adrenalin rush of reducing the power of an opponent's argument in negotiations to seeking common ground in creating solutions that work for everyone: moving from win/lose to win/win. My approach has become one of respectful listening; asking powerful questions that provoke deep thought, brings out new insights and that stimulates creativity. My baseline is that my role is to help my clients find a mutually beneficial answer, and to articulate it in a way that will be heard and understood. The situations in which I work vary greatly, but the common denominator is that I work with people who are seeking better ways of resolving disagreements and conflicts on a personal or organizational level. There are multiple factors that feed conflict and the inability to make peace. History, values, personality, experience, word choice, intonation, body language, needs and interests. Extraneous commitments. Culture. So, you may find me in a corporate environment investigating workplace toxicity, or in a not-for-profit building a common understanding of rapidly changing circumstances (e.g. housing crisis during COVID), and with families.

Apr. 2006 - Apr. 2015We manufacture and sell dry ice primarily for food preservation in East Africa. Dry ice is a product with great capacity for contributing to the UN Millenium Goals. We believe in making a living in a socially meaningful way. As our strategic plans start to bring our plans to fruition the pressure is on to ensure that we are 100% reliable in delivering food-grade quality dry ice to our customers, big and small while expanding our market to a broader range of appliations, e.g. using dry ice for industrial cleaning such as grain silos and abbatoirs. We're looking for equipment to capture or manufacture our own CO2 to reduce our dependence on an external supplier.

The One who can Write It
Freelance and GhostwriterThe One who can Write It
Jul. 2003Halifax, Nova Scotia, CanadaI write blogs, articles, literature reviews, research reports in topics of general interest. My areas of special insight/expertise are in human resources management, conflict situations and resolution, the environment, travel, pet care, gardening, the Maritime Provinces of Canada, and Africa. In mid-2015 I completed two very diverse manuscripts: The one is a ghost-written biography which includes a grandfather's diaries dating back to the days of Lawrence of Arabia; the other is a light-read adventure romance, which I co-wrote with my friend Bette Yetman. In November 2021 a remarkable book was published about our evolution from our first use of tools, use of language and collaboration, to where we area today. Megafauna: first victims of the human-caused extinction, by Baz Edmeades tells a fascinating story in a blend of scientific evidence presented with lawyerly precision and vivid entertaining anecdotal illustrations. In the back of that book there are some 30 pages of notes that offer further elaboration, clarification, and identifying sources. That was my project. I wrote those, under direction from the author. And compiled the bibliography. For the next edition I'll do an Index. In the Fall of 2022 I wrote a series of subject-matter related articles for, and edited the website of a Canadian professional organization to improve readability and enhance the user-experience of visitors to the site. Currently I'm celebrating the publication of my own first book: Lessons from my coach...couch. It is the story of my coaching work, from the persective of my extremely observant and opinionated Jack Russell terrier, Farley. Sales are going well and the feedback has been lovely.
