Speed Art MuseumCurator of Academic Engagement and Special Projects
Jun. 2022 - Jun. 2025Louisville, Kentucky, United StatesI curated three solo exhibitions for the Louisville's Black Avant-Garde series, each of which was accompanied by a publication edited by myself. I initiated the process of complying with NAGPRA federal law, by hosting consultations with Tribal Heritage and Preservation Officers from three federally recognized tribes. Together with the intern I supervised and mentored, I organized a reinstallation of the museum's Native American art collection, and partnered with UofL's Creative Writing Program to bring in award-winning poet and multidisciplinary artist Layli Long Soldier to give a public program in celebration of Native American Heritage month. I purchased twelve new works by Black or Native American artists for the museum's permanent collection. I planned convenings, presented research at conferences and led guided tours in the galleries. Contributed to successful grant applications with the IMLS, Ford, Mellon, Luce, and Gilliam Foundations, bringing in over a million dollars in funds.
