Sr. Research Analyst
NORC at the University of ChicagoSr. Research Analyst
Dec. 2005 - Feb. 2007Washington D.C. Metro AreaI began at NORC as a temp, filling in for a dismissed executive assistant. Within 2 weeks, President and CEO Dan Gaylin proposed a transition plan for me to join the company permanently as a Sr. Research Analyst. I began work on several healthcare projects while working with HR to hire and train a permanent executive assistant. Over the next year I worked on a broad spectrum of projects involving the monitoring, evaluation and management of state and federal health-related programs and research areas. Among them: I created an Access database of multivariables in quality improvement, leading and mentoring a team of junior researchers and college interns. I coordinated a day-long Technical Expert Panel work-session with 8 experts who flew into D.C. to advise on the project. With the data I co-authored "Toward an Evaluation of the Quality Improvement Organization Program: Beyond the 8th Scope of Work", an inventory of activities conducted by the national network of Quality Improvement Programs (QIOs), and a proposal of methodologies to evaluate Medicare's QIO in the future. In the area of Health IT, I worked on a multi-million dollar federal contract to guide and monitor advances in the intersection of technology and our medical systems. My involvement included financial tracking for various aspects of the contract; evaluating and selecting abstracts for presentation at the NORC-organized National HealthIT Conference; and determining and disseminating lessons learned in health information exchange. For NORC's Walsh Center for Rural Health Analysis, I conducted phone interviews with CFOs of several rural hospitals to collect data for "How Will Elimination of Hospital Bad Debt Reimbursement Affect Rural PPS Hospitals?", a report examining the financial effect that changes in Medicare bad debt payment policy might have on access to healthcare in rural areas.
Translation and Interpreting Services
UAMSTranslation and Interpreting Services
Jan. 2003 - Dec. 2005Little Rock, Arkansas AreaI was hired to create the hospital’s first Translation and Interpreting Services in compliance with guidelines of various governing bodies (Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Minority Health, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, etc.). After researching the legal and ethical aspects, I implemented the program creating awareness and “buy-in” through meetings (COO, Risk Management, etc.), formal presentations, unit-specific in-service trainings, community outreach, articles in nursing publications, and media relations. In addition to interpreting between Spanish-speaking patients and English-speaking hospital staff, I managed TIS daily operations, overseeing in-house and agency-contracted medical interpreters and translators. I translated documents including legal consent forms, medical diagnostics, bill of rights, patient education materials as well as editing other translators’ first drafts for accuracy, style and consistency in terminology.
