• Set the academic vision and strategic priorities for the department in alignment with faculty and institutional goals.
• Lead departmental planning, resource allocation, and academic forecasting.
• Identify and develop new course and research opportunities, including market-responsive programme growth.
Line Management and Staff Development
• Line manage academic and professional services staff within the department.
• Oversee staff workload planning, performance management, and recruitment.
• Support staff development, promotion, and wellbeing, ensuring alignment with university policies and equality commitments.
Budget and Resource Management
• Manage departmental budgets and oversee procurement and resourcing needs.
• Make decisions about staffing, equipment, and space allocation.
• Ensure efficient and sustainable use of departmental resources.
Quality Assurance and Compliance
• Oversee quality assurance across all programmes in the department.
• Ensure compliance with university regulations, external benchmarks, and professional standards.
• Respond to external examiner reports, student feedback, and internal audits.
• Lead preparations for institutional reviews, accreditations, and audits (e.g. QAA).
Inclusive Practice and SEN Coordination
• Foster a culture of inclusion and accessibility across all teaching and departmental activity.
• Support academic staff in understanding and responding to the needs of students with SEN.
• Ensure departmental practices align with equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) policies.
Student Experience and Academic Standards
• Monitor student progression, satisfaction, and outcomes across all programmes.
• Work closely with programme leaders and module convenors to enhance the student experience.
• Oversee responses to complaints, appeals, and student conduct matters.
Cross-University Engagement and Representation
• Represent the department on faculty or university-level committees and working groups.
• Act as the department’s voice in cross-institutional initiatives, partnerships, and strategic planning.
• Build relationships with external stakeholders (e.g. partner institutions, industry, funders).
