I have overall responsibility for the Engineering division and the design, build and delivery of the high temperature pyrolysis technology for the conversion of waste to byproduct char, syngas (raw and cleaned), heat and combined heat and power generation. I am responsible for the overall legislative compliance from the point of view of build to IED compliance and adapting the process for a wide variety of wastes from waste to car seats, carpets, mixed plastics wastes and other more diverse organic wastes. We operate a full testing facility in Wells, Somerset to trial materials and derive mass and energy balances, full syngas analysis, char characterisation and IED compliance. We will also provide chars for testing if requested.

The recruitment of R&amp;D projects is via a twice-yearly Call for Proposals, which involves the submission of Outline Proposals and subsequently Full Proposals from those organisations short-listed from the first ‘Outline’ round. Projects are selected using a range of relevant evaluation criteria to determine value for money to DBERR.

Also, work on the design and flowsheeting of complete updraft biomass gasification systems up to 2.5 MWe, one project for Shell. Other responsibilities include proposal preparation and monitoring of EU contract on biomass pyrolysis and determination of norms and standards for biomass pyrolysis liquids, process engineering, plant commissioning, operation and trouble-shooting. I worked on the writing of IPC and IPPC applications to the Environment Agency, England. The IPC approval for the 250 kg/h fast pyrolysis process was the first in the UK.

Over £ 4.5 million has been won for research and development in the pyrolysis and gasification from Government departments, research institutes and industries, the EU, the UK Dept of Trade and Industry, and the International Energy Agency Bio-energy Agreement for Aston University during the last 13 years.
