Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital
2016 – Present | Johannesburg, South Africa I co-founded and currently lead the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, the first facility in South Africa to combine a dedicated veterinary hospital with a wildlife rehabilitation centre. Our mission is to provide free, world-class veterinary care to indigenous wildlife, with the ultimate goal of releasing every patient back into their natural habitat. Key contributions and responsibilities: • Wildlife Medicine & Rehabilitation – Treated more than 370 indigenous species of birds, mammals, and reptiles, specialising in small to medium-sized South African wildlife. • Pangolin Health & Conservation – Lead veterinarian for Temminck’s ground pangolins, recognised internationally as the most experienced pangolin veterinarian. Conducted pioneering research on pangolin haematology and clinical chemistry, published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science. • Conservation & Law Enforcement Support – Work closely with law enforcement agencies to combat the illegal wildlife trade through veterinary expertise, testifying as a subject matter expert, evidence gathering, and the care of confiscated animals. • Education & Training – Mentor veterinary students, nurses, and professionals in wildlife medicine both local and international. Currently developing a dedicated teaching facility to build capacity in wildlife healthcare and rehabilitation. • Research & Publications – Co-author of Chapter 29 (Veterinary Health of Pangolins) in the IUCN publication Pangolins – Science, Society and Conservation. Member of the IUCN SSC Pangolin Specialist Group and Small Carnivore Specialist Group.
