Royal Navy reservesOfficer Cadet
Jan. 2015 - Jun. 2018Edinburgh, United KingdomThe aim of the EURNU is to develop undergraduates who show potential to become the leaders of tomorrow, through maritime experiences and exposure to the values and ethos of the Royal Navy. Through the EURNU I have learned many skills one of which is leadership and team management, while away on deployment this summer each student had to complete a pilotage. This requires you to plan a safe route in and out of a harbour. This means you spend a few hours looking at charts and working out distances for the waypoints on your route. When you put this into practice it requires you to communicate with all the people who are in your watch that are working on chart on radar to make sure the ship is not in any danger. This has also developed my decision making skills as you are required to make choices over what you should do in certain situations, for example If you have another vessel coming straight towards you, you have to use your knowledge of the rules of the road to make a decision whether you should alter the ships course.
