A compulsory course for all Gender Studies majors; this course seeks to increase students’ awareness of the relevance of gender issues to their lives while developing a critical understanding of the multiple and contested meanings of gender both in contemporary African and international contexts. The course introduces key concepts concerning gender and sexuality, culture and identity, context, and the dynamics of masculinity and femininity. The course also explores connections between gender, ‘race’, class, generation, and location, and draws on a number of different resource materials including (but not limited to) visual materials such as documentaries, film and media, and art. AXL2100F: Politics of Gender & Sexuality in Contemporary African Contexts. The AXL2100F course explores all the debates centered on gender and sexualities, in the context of the way they're spoken about throughout the continent, exploring case studies of countries with prominent engagements and discussions on sexual rights (Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa). The course looks at colonial conquest and the sexualities that colonization has created, and the shift of 'post-independence' sexualities and gender debates. The course also looks at (de)criminalization of sex work, culture and sexuality, reproductive health and sexual rights, gender and the media.
