Jason Phillip Gutierrez is a seasoned international journalist who has worked for Agence France Presse (AFP), Al Jazeera, the Asia Times and others. He is currently a freelance journalist for the New York Times covering Southeast Asia with a focus on the Philippines. He has served as the president of the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines. Mr. Gutierrez was also the Head of News for the Philippines of Radio Free Asia’s online news service BenarNews.org, from 2017-2025. He managed a small group of journalists who covered insurgency and political developments, as well as reported on a wide-range of topics, including key developments in the South China Sea. In March 2012, he was an undercover writer/photographer for AFP in Burma in the lead up to democratic elections won by democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi. It was his second time in the turbulent country. In 2008, he was among a few foreign correspondents who managed to sneak into junta-ruled Burma to cover the aftermath of deadly cyclone Nargis that killed hundreds of thousands. Mr Gutierrez has covered Afghanistan as an embedded journalist three times, the latest of which was in 2011, when he was stationed in the frontlines in Kandahar, the birth place of the Taliban. The previous year, he was among a few AFP journalists who covered US troops in the battle to gain control of Marjah, a stronghold of the Taliban. Several members of the US Marine unit were killed, and Mr. Gutierrez was one of only two journalists allowed to cover the emotional tribute to the fallen troops. Mr. Gutierrez has covered political turmoil in East Timor and its transition to democracy, the Tamil Tiger insurgency in Sri Lanka as well as major disasters and political upheavals in countries such as Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia and Laos among others.
