Excavation of the Best Farm Slave Village (L'Hermitage) which, during its height in the late 1700's, was home to the second largest population of enslaved individuals in Frederick, Maryland, and amongst the largest in Maryland as a whole. The multi-year study produced over 10,000 individual artifacts, uncovered the foundations for upwards of six dwellings, and radically altered the ways in which slave systems in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States were perceived
Washington Parks & PeopleField Archaeologist and Researcher
Aug. 2009 - Apr. 2011Washington D.C. Archaeological excavations, surveys, and historical research of Walter Pierce Park in NW Washington D.C. The current property was, during the late 19th century, the largest Black cemetery in Washington, D.C. and interred upwards of 9,000 individuals. The cemetery was eventually paved over and turned into a recreation area/dog park without prior notice given to the descendants. In addition to locating and organizing the descendants, my research centered on: - Epidemiology of 19th Century Black populations in Washington D.C. - Life expectancy and Mortality Rates amongst 19th Century Black populations in Washington D.C.
