May. 2004 - Nov. 2009Washington, DCThe Advisory Board Company is a publicly traded research and consulting firm based in Washington DC, with over 3,000 FTE's in 12 offices on 3 continents. The company was sold in August 2017 for $1.3B to United Healthcare - Optum. My direct supervisor hand-selected me as the firm’s first non-physician for training physicians in General Management. He stated that the only way to be effective with the firm's most demanding constituency was for the leader to, in his words, "have gravitas, and you've got more than most anyone I've met." As a Lead Faculty, I taught leadership and managmenet to clinical and executive leaders at the world’s most respected provider organizations, e.g. The Mayo Clinic, Scripps, Stanford University Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Orange County, Providence Health & Services, Massachusetts General Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center, etc. Highlights Include:
✔ Taught Michael Porter's Competitive Strategy to general surgeons at The Mayo Clinic
✔ Trained in Case Method Teaching at Harvard Business School ✔ Directed ~70 healthcare provider's physician leaders through Change Management training Additionally, I was one of the select faculty for The Academy Fellowship, a two-year Succession Management program that prepared high-performing Vice Presidents and Directors for C-Suite roles. Training took place through 6 two-day intensives, covering key areas of General Management. The teaching method was entirely case-based, using Harvard Business School case studies and faciliated discussion to instill the learning. Areas of Mastery:
✔ Change Management ✔ Strategic Planning
✔ Operations Management
✔ Talent Management ✔ Competitive Analysis 📌 For more detailed accomplishments, please request an annotated content listing at dswestervelt@gmail.com.
