Jul. 2019 - Jan. 2020Turriff, Scotland, UKA significant change in direction for me having been previously associated with the drilling industry for 31 years! Great team of trusted professionals with a 'get it done' approach to everything that they do on a global basis...but, as with all businesses, with some challenges and room for improvement.
Head of Engineering & Technology at Brandt Products - National Oilwell Varco
National Oilwell VarcoHead of Engineering & Technology at Brandt Products - National Oilwell Varco
Oct. 2017 - Jun. 2019Aberdeen, United KingdomThe focus was again on NPD & innovation and, working with a fantastic team of engineers we started to see some great opportunities. Sadly the market was not in the best of shape by 2019 though! Travelling a lot during this period in support of wider technical developments and, again working with some fantastic innovators across the NOV business I can say that it was another highly enjoyable and invigorating part of my journey! I can certainly say that the team I worked with met all my expectations - being highly collaborative, responsive and disciplined in everything that they did...despite significant and unwavering pressure.
Director of Product Line Management - Shaker Products
National Oilwell VarcoDirector of Product Line Management - Shaker Products
Dec. 2016 - Oct. 2017Aberdeen, United KingdomWorked on the final development and release of what would become known as the Brandt Sabre shaker. Another 'step change' in performance! Also worked with the wider Brandt team (back for my second time) on all sorts of business improvements while also integrating the two teams formed from Brandt and Axiom.
Managing Director
Axiom Process LtdManaging Director
Jul. 2001 - Dec. 2016Aberdeen, Scotland, United KingdomA start-up company and back working with my old boss and former colleagues who came to join us, we started with a business plan...and that was it! We had no office, no vehicles, NO employment contracts, no products! Ah well...heads down again! Quickly developed and patented what would become the highly successful AX Screening System and soon thereafter the revolutionary AX-1 shaker - which would become the benchmark for a range of triple deck machines that would follow from competitors. Thanks to the great relationships I had built up over >20 years we had the trust of some great people in many of the major operators and drilling contractors and it just 'took off'! We still had our challenges but those same people stuck by us because we persevered and made sure that we never let anyone down. Built another great team around us and developed engineers, managers and a plethora of other stand-out people who are now at the top of their games. Well done to all of you. It was all about hard work and an attention to quality! My management style also changed over this period into becoming less of a micro-manager and more as as mentor and innovator.
Technical Manager
Brandt Rigtech - A Varco CompanyTechnical Manager
Jun. 2000 - Jul. 2001Aberdeen, Scotland, United KingdomWith a Varco & Tuboscope merger also came a merger of (Thule) Rigtech and Brandt. In early 2001 decided that I needed to move on...thanks to everyone in my time through Thule Rigtech, Varco and Brandt for the great times and experiences...! Bye!
Technical Manager
Rigtech - A Varco CompanyTechnical Manager
Jun. 1999 - Jun. 2000Aberdeen, Scotland, United KingdomBack to Technical Manager role and now working (part time) at a corporate level as part of a 'New Product Development - Best Practices Team'. I learned SO MUCH about NPD and innovation over that period and I think that's why I now think the way I do! I think I travelled round the world 3 times just on that project (we still had a 'day job') and we visited so many interesting [non oilfield] companies to learn how the best do it! You don't get that stuff out of a book!!
Product Manager - Solids Control
Thule Rigtech - A Varco CompanyProduct Manager - Solids Control
Jun. 1996 - Jun. 1999Aberdeen, Scotland, United KingdomWith development of the new VSM 300 shaker nearing its end I needed to get to the rig and work on the final details. Then it was a matter of getting it into the market...and wow...what a success that shaker was and continues to be! As with most products we had our teething issues - so I continued to spend a lot of time offshore making sure we supported the client and generate the quite significant cost savings they sought! With pressure from Varco to develop more breakthrough products we started work on a new 'automated centrifuge' and continued the development of the AMS mud mixing and handling systems. As we found, AMS was too far ahead of its time!! Son #2 arrived in August 1998 - sadly we found quite soon thereafter that he was also autistic - at least we knew what was ahead of us so...heads down and get on with it! My advice though, if you think you're dealing well with these types of pressures be ready for some reality! It also does not mean that everyone else if coping!
Technical Manager
Thule RigtechTechnical Manager
Apr. 1994 - Jun. 1996Aberdeen, Scotland, United KingdomAs we developed more detailed analysis tools and challenged the market and clients on how to do things both differently and better - what better time to come back to head-office and play a pivotal role in this very exciting period. Working on home improvements, travelling and basic day to day working was tough - thanks to Lone, my fantastic wife, she held us all together. Our son Daniel was diagnosed with Autism at this time - pretty scary but at least we got to understand why he was so 'different' but the team pulled together around us and we got fantastic support. Starting to work on more New Products and became heavily involved in the very interesting and exciting interactions on Thule's sale to Varco!
Regional Manager
Thule RigtechRegional Manager
Jul. 1992 - Apr. 1994Aberdeen, Scotland, United KingdomSingapore was great and a watershed moment in my career. I was still travelling a lot (sometimes to the detriment of my marriage and relationship with my son - be VERY CAREFUL!) but the experience of having to make decisions on my own went quickly from 'very scary' to 'enlightening' and then to fun. Developed so many new systems (in an age of a desktop PC, fax and NO CELL PHONES) was hugely satisfying! Built up a vast network of clients in the area - most of whom I have the pleasure to call great friends. I believe a lot of what we did in building those relationships also taught me a great lesson: "Clients don't care how much you know until they know how much you care!" In two years we went from operating on 2 rigs in SE Asia to operating on 11. A great friend took over from me and that area continued to go from strength to strength. Needed back at base!!

Jun. 1990 - Jul. 1992Aberdeen, Scotland, United KingdomStill working offshore I now had to sell as well! Started to really dig deep into relationship building and innovation around our area of the rig Met my wife in circumstances that are far too complicated to describe here. 'We' got pregnant soon thereafter (oops!). Having spent a lot of time abroad now, by early '92 I was asked to open up a regional office in Singapore. So we duly got married and packed up what little we had and 1 year old baby and excitedly headed for the Far East!

Thule RigtechService Engineer
Aug. 1988 - Jun. 1990Aberdeen, Scotland, United KingdomI started on the Monday and was on BP Magnus on the Thursday as a trainee hand - which meant that my first ever flight was in a chopper! Quickly moved into a fully-fledged field hand because I worked with a great team of lads - in one of the most dirty areas of drilling rigs. Quickly moved into doing a lot of installation survey and installation work (leaning on my Technical Drawing skills) and loved every minute of it.
