Smart Mobility Use Case
H2020 symbIoTeSmart Mobility Use Case
Jan. 2016 - Dec. 2018In a world of smart networked devices, wearables, sensors and actuators, transparent and secure access to and usage of the available resources across various IoT domains is crucial to satisfy the needs of an increasingly connected society. The current IoT ecosystem is however fragmented: a series of vertical solutions exist today which, on the one hand, integrate connected objects within local environments using purpose-specific implementations and, on the other hand, connect smart spaces with a back-end cloud hosting often dedicated proprietary software components. symbIoTe (symbiosis of smart objects across IoT environments) comes to remedy this fragmented environment by providing an abstraction layer for a “unified view” on various platforms and their resources, so that platform resources are transparent to application designers and developers. The smart mobility and ecological urban routing use case aims at addressing the problem of inefficient transport and poor air quality that many European cities face nowadays. This use case will offer the ecologically most preferable routes for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians based on the available traffic and environmental data acquired through various platforms. For air quality monitoring, in-situ environmental monitoring stations can be combined with wearable sensors and mobile devices (mobile crowd sensing approach) to provide improved environmental measurements which are dense both in space and time. At the same time, traffic information related to road traffic congestion and occupancy of parking spaces offered by fixed sensors also provides the input data for ecologically preferable route calculation.
