Work Background
Fractional CMO / HOD (Former Head of Communications Capitec Bank )
Self-EmployedFractional CMO / HOD (Former Head of Communications Capitec Bank )
Mar. 2023Cape Town, Western Cape, South AfricaAfter a decade and a half of establishing and building the Communications Department at Capitec, culminating in the production of the Bank’s history book, “Let’s Build a Bank”, I retired in 2023 from the position but not from the industry. I’m going into a new phase of life, and want to apply my knowledge by focusing on three types of opportunities in the market: 1. To help businesses build highly efficient and creative Communications and Marketing teams. Having said this, I will be available for contractual work where I help your business to help itself. Getting things off the ground, steering them in the correct direction, training people to run with the everyday grinding to build a world class Comms or Marketing team and positioning your business and brand/s for sustainable future growth. Then I leave your team to run with the ball. 2. To put an adhoc Comms team together to address a specific problem or a brand crisis that a business or personality is experiencing. The nature of these contracts will be shorter and ideally have measurable milestones, which determines if the objective was reached and the contract thus concluded. 3. To serve as a consultant to a project where a business already has a relationship with a client, and I just provide a “behind-the-scenes” service to boost the business/ agency/consultancy. These three streams of opportunities will be considered against the following criteria: 1. Is it an interesting project/ task? 2. Are the people nice to work with? 3. Do they compensate fairly and timeously? 4. Do they respect what you bring to the table and understand the value? 5. Do they allow hybrid/remote working within reason? 6. Do they focus on the outcome rather than the daily actions and red-tape and meetings? If you’re open to discussing the above, then let’s make magic. Ministry of Trade & IndustryPress & Private Secretary to Minister Of Trade & Industry (Trevor Manuel)
May. 1994 - Jul. 1995Cape Town / PretoriaI served as the Private Secretary & Press Secretary to the new incoming Minister of Trade & Industry, Mr Trevor Manuel, in the new democratically elected government of President Nelson Mandela. I was the only staff member retained from the previous ministerial staff to join Minister Trevor Manuel's personal staff in the ministry. My main tasks were to train all the new staff members entering the Ministry and to keep the perception (media) steady during the difficult transition phase to a demoracy. I undertook to stay a year in this position. I eventually stayed a lttle longer, whereupon I returned to the private sector / Advertising & Communication Industry. The International experience gained at the highest level of our country's business & political dealings, proved invaluable in years to come and in my later career.
Private & Press Secretary to Sir David Graaff
Ministry of Trade & IndustryPrivate & Press Secretary to Sir David Graaff
Apr. 1991 - Apr. 1994Cape Town / PretoriaServed as the Private Secretary to Sir David Graaff. (Sir David later left politics and established the De Grendel Wine estate on his family estate outside Panorama, Durbanville, Cape Town). Sir David was appointed alongside Mr Derek Keys. They were both from the private sector and their brief was to prepare the South African economy for the transition to a democracy. Derek Keys focussed on Finance as he had a double portfolio, while Sir David focussed on the Trade & Industry portfolio as his deputy. The business friendly environment, SA trade and finance legislation and governmental framework at the time of handover to the new government can be credited to Keys and Graaff's business insight and excellent working relationship with the ANC economic team. I was priviledged to serve as Private and the de facto Press Secretary to this portfolio during this exciting period in South African history.
