Dec. 1998California, Washington, LouisianaFractional CTO & EVP, Principal Engineer - Overall responsibility for architectural solutions for bespoke development projects in trusted systems, distributed systems, artificial intelligence, and autonomous computing. ● Farmwave LLC, Early stage AgTech startup. ○ Designed the architecture and led the design and implementation of a real-time harvest loss reduction system and related automated backend training system. ○ Evaluated imagers, designed the vision system, developed classification models for multiple edible and textile crops ○ Supervised model training and QA, and coordinated with other architecture and development groups ○ Recruited and trained a staff of six. ○ Delivered all components and models ahead of schedule; 0 to 1 in ten months ○ Tooled in C++ and Python using PyTorch, Tensorflow, and Onnx and deployed to Google Cloud Platform and edge computing devices. ● Los Angeles-based stealth mode startup ○ Architected and designed a distributed, near-real-time, ground combat simulation system for the entertainment industry. ○ Tooling in Kotlin, Scala, Postgres, Datomic, and MonetDB.
Fellow, Computational Science
Nutrien Ag SolutionsFellow, Computational Science
Aug. 2020 - Oct. 2022Provide technical leadership to computer scientists, software engineers, data scientists, and data engineers in the areas of mechanistic and ML-based models, and supporting trusted distributed and HPC architectures for large scale ag tech and genomic applications. Responsible for zero-trust microservice architecture, userland object-capability model with explicit mechanisms for TCB minimization and positioning for leveraging secure enclaves, security policy, choreography and orchestration mechanisms, and technology selection for cloud-provider-agnostic deployment. Infrastructure work in Kotlin, applications level in a mix of Python, C, and Unified Parallel C with usual mix of gRPC and protobufs with GraphQL wrappers for certain endpoints.
Board Member
American Valley AviationBoard Member
Jan. 2011 - Mar. 2016Quincy, CAIndependent board member of a precision aerospace machining/fabrication and technology insertion firm.
VP Engineering and Chief Architect
FATHOM (Global Water Management, LLC)VP Engineering and Chief Architect
Dec. 2014 - Feb. 2016Phoenix, AZ and Austin, TX● Designed and developed a multitenant, geographically distributed data fusion system to support utility operations and machine learning models for anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, billing, and customer support. ● Requirements included ingestion of hourly meter readings from tens of millions of meters across multiple utilities in North America and the UK, ArcGIS integration, and integration with multiple metering systems. Designed to EAL4+ with [CAPP] and [LSPP] protection profiles using allow/deny ACLs. ● Recruited 12 developers, three DevOps engineers, two QA engineers, two UX designers, as well as multiple domestic and offshore consultants. ● Instrumental in closing Silverlake-led B-round. ● Backend tooling in C, Scala, and Java; frontend tooling in Java, Swift, and Typescript; deployment to AWS.
CTO
The Receivables ExchangeCTO
Jan. 2008 - Jan. 2014New Orleans, LA and New York, NY● Designed and led the implementation of, an auction-based exchange for the trading of SMB and large corporate receivables. ● Designed to EAL4+ with [CAPP], [RBACPP] and [LSPP] protection profiles using finegrained capabilities, as well as support for business-rule-specific two-key operations. ● Recruited engineering and operations staff for sites in New Orleans, New York, and multiple locations in California;, ● Participated in defining the business rules of the exchange; instrumental in A through D funding rounds. ● Tooling in C and Java on the backend, Adobe Air for frontend; deployment to colo.
CTO
Kestrel TechnologiesCTO
Jan. 1999 - Dec. 2007New York, NY and Quincy, CA● Managed development teams for Kestrel’s RAPTr family of front office trading systems, defined the architecture, and led the implementation of Kestrel’s ETI family of electronic offering and market connectivity products. ● RAPTr used native Windows clients for presentation and distributed calculations, Unix backends using Oracle for persistence, Tuxedo for middleware, and a native distributed caching system that allowed data mutation without requiring centralized locking. ● The ETI family was based on a distributed object environment that supported on-the-fly extension of object classes and orchestration pipelines, allowing on-the-fly changes to data types and functionality. ETI components were self-organizing meshes of federated services, what would today be recognized as a data mesh architecture.
