The OnionAnchor, Onion News Network

Workshop Facilitator
SunArts Media, LLCWorkshop Facilitator
Sep. 2023Las Vegas, Nevada, United StatesI believe that seeking guidance is an act of wisdom, not weakness. Many organizations are more than capable of solving their own problems, but they could use help to think them through. That’s where I come in. I design and facilitate workshops to demystify problems and develop solutions. Workshopping is more engaging, enjoyable and actionable than the average meeting. Teams end up uniting around a solution, which makes execution less costly and more satisfying in the long run. Workshopping uses structured, engaging exercises to help your organization solve its own problems. My job is to facilitate, to manage the team's energy and to deliver you clear results to implement right away.
Creator/Host, "The Night Light with Joshua Johnson"
Self-employedCreator/Host, "The Night Light with Joshua Johnson"
Jun. 2023Las Vegas, Nevada, United StatesI've spent 20+ years in broadcasting using people's stories to foster connection and provide insights on the biggest stories of our times. "The Night Light" continues this work. It's a podcast, Substack site (nightlightshow.com) and live video stream focused on democracy: not just inside the Beltway, but outside your door. Everyone's issues in this democracy boil down to this question: "How am I gonna live in this country... with THEM?" We all have a "them", and we are all "them" to someone else. "The Night Light" is an interactive talk show aimed at unpacking taboos, demystifying big issues and searching for solutions with people who put connection above politics.
Anchor, "NOW Tonight"
NBC NewsAnchor, "NOW Tonight"
Sep. 2021 - Nov. 2022New York, United StatesI helped create and anchored the first 8pm ET news program on NBC News NOW, the fast-growing streaming news channel of NBC News. Unlike the rest of the network’s offerings, this program was interactive with the audience, regularly soliciting questions, stories and feedback from viewers. My team included an executive producer and two senior producers, with whom I worked to train our staff, coach them on writing skills, vet story ideas and highlight exceptional work.
Anchor, "The Week"
MSNBCAnchor, "The Week"
Sep. 2020 - Sep. 2021New York, United StatesI helped expand MSNBC’s live programming into weekend primetime, anchoring its first 8pm ET weekend newscast. The show focused on breaking news, panel discussions, topical analysis, my original essays, and audience engagement on timely issues. Building out this time slot required me to work with the executive producer, and the senior EP to onboard, train and guide a mostly-remote production team. The show launched during the COVID pandemic, so this position taught me a lot about managing a distributed team.
Weekend Anchor
MSNBCWeekend Anchor
Feb. 2020 - Sep. 2020New York, United StatesPrior to The Week, I served as a weekend anchor on MSNBC. My newscasts were generally at 3pm ET and 9pm ET. I also filled in as a dayside anchor on the streaming channel NBC News NOW during and after the 2020 election.
Host, "1A"
WAMU 88.5Host, "1A"
Nov. 2016 - Dec. 2019Washington D.C. Metro AreaWhen The Diane Rehm Show ended after 37 years on-air, I helped create and was the founding host of its successor, based at WAMU. During my tenure the show built an audience of more than 4 million listeners a week on well over 300 NPR member stations. Its name was my idea, referring both to the First Amendment and to an industry term for a newspaper’s front page. The program frequently traveled the country for remote broadcasts and live audience events, including at the Aspen Ideas Festival. Launching this program required significant collaboration with outside partners: from the station managers who acquired our show to the composer who developed our theme music. We intentionally built a diverse team of many backgrounds, including some who were working in broadcasting for the very first time. My primary role was to cast a strong vision for what this program could be, articulate it to the team through training and idea vetting, and evangelize that idea to listeners, earned media, funders… and more than a few skeptics.

Jul. 2010 - Feb. 2016San Francisco, CAI researched, wrote and presented live, local newscasts on KQED Public Radio, at the time America's most listened to NPR News station. My duties also included substitute hosting "The Florida Roundup", a week-in-review call-in show on WLRN Public Radio. And I gained experience with writing grants as a finalist for the first-ever Knight News Challenge. (We won but, sadly, could not receive the funds due to a technicality.)
