The University of ManchesterParticle Physics Research Placement

Jul. 2015 - Sep. 2015Facilitated by the Nuffield Foundation, I was granted a 3-month research placement in the Particle Physics Department at the University of Manchester, to research the Short-Baseline Neutrino Experiment in construction at Fermilab. During my time, I built a laser-based system that measures the mechanical tension of wires used in the Anode Plane Assemblies of the Short-Baseline Near Detector. The system built allows for a measurement of the wire tension with a precision ≤1%. For the duration of the project I was working with PhD students, and was supervised by two Doctorate researchers. I performed analysis on my data using algorithms written in C++, and got familiar working with the Linux OS and the ROOT Data Analysis Framework, developed by CERN. At the end of my placement, I wrote a 17 page report which I presented to the Head of the Department and got nominated for the Gold CREST Award given by the British Science Association.
