MRCPost-doc
Jan. 2003 - Dec. 2009On completion of my PhD I remained in the field of molecular biology, genetics, developmental biology and stem cells. Post-doc positions focussed on a number of mouse mutants with different phenotypes. This combined experience encompasses embryology from conception to just prior to birth using techniques such as all molecular biology, imaging, immunohistochemistry, ISH, gene manipulation, transgenics, cell culture, ES cell technologies and of course developmental biology.
Because of my active involvement in promoting science through lecturing to gifted and talented students and working with schools; I was seconded to the position of Regional Communications Manager – South West for the MRC. I was a senior communication link between MRC Head Office, the CEO and Units/MRC grant holders in the South-West region.
MRCResearch Assistant/Part time PhD Student
Jan. 1996 - Dec. 2002At the Medical Research Council (MRC) Mammalian Genetics Unit, I worked as a RA/ managed molecular biology and ES cell laboratories for the unit and completed a PhD part-time (in 4 years - 2000 - 2003). My PhD focused on the genes involved in mouse inner ear development. Making/screening an otic vesicle library; culturing/manipulating embryonic stem cells for gene targeting, making and characterising transgenic mice.
GlaxoSmithKlineStudent
Jan. 1993 - Dec. 19961993 – 1994 - Glaxo Research and Development, Ware, Herts. Responsibilities - Sandwich Year Student for one year in the Genetic Toxicology Department conducting an investigation into the reliability of the Comet Assay (Single Cell Electrophoresis Assay) to give consistent significant results. This project formed a large proportion of a greater assessment of the assay in preparation of the assay to be used in routine batch testing of drugs to establish their effect on a single cell’s DNA within the testing regime in the Genetic Toxicology Department. This was carried out as part completion of a BSc (Hons) degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology. 1995 – 1996- F.O.R.C.E Cancer Centre, Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Exeter. Responsibilities - Conducted a project investigating the presence and variable lengths of telomeres in a number of different cell types in the blood. This work was a project in part completion for a MSc Degree from the University of Exeter. This work involved molecular biology and tissue culture techniques as well as some flow cytometry, tutoring an undergraduate tutorial group and demonstrating to undergraduate students.
