Jun. 2015 - Aug. 2015Huehuetenango, GuatemalaI performed extensive research to help victims of domestic violence gain access to financial reparations, which they had been repeatedly denied due to an ineffective and poorly structured judicial system. The lack of a sound human resources strategy created miscommunication not only between legal employees and judges, but also between local and national institutions, leading to a pandemic of incoherent case rulings. My proposed solution, which is in the process of being implemented, was to establish universal criteria for examining cases across courts and to create a database of court rulings to maintain transparency, hold judges accountable, and identify possible misinterpretations of the law. The project was presented to and guided by the Judicial Body of Guatemala and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECID).
