Jul. 2014 - Oct. 2019Secunda, South AfricaAs Acting Vice President Project Preparation for a twelve-month period, I manage a portfolio of more than 30 large projects with values ranging from $20 million to $300 million. This comprises leading the development of the project initiation process for large projects and oversight of their successful construction and commissioning, on time and to budget. One of these projects (an emergency repair to a catalytic cracker unit) was recognised as the organisational Project of the Year in 2018. The role also involves improving project success through the design, promotion and roll-out of a new company-wide project lifecycle model, and managing the relationship and interfaces with multiple company units. To date in the role, I am pleased to have implemented several commercial-scale demonstration units where there was significant technological uncertainty, including applying new technology to reduce emissions from coal-fired boilers. I have also delivered a project that had been terminated due to over-expenditure, by re-framing it into a program of smaller projects and reducing its cost by focusing on resource continuity to enhance efficiency of execution.

I designed and implemented a new structure for Secunda Chemicals to support delivery through programme lines, and was formally recognised at corporate level for outstanding safety performance during construction of one project in my portfolio. Managing a multi-disciplinary team to deliver a portfolio of projects for the Secunda Chemical Businesses, I re-established relationships with business partners and established the program line concept, and delivered on all commitments with regards to studies and projects. Finally, I oversaw the provision of regular reporting to and communication with all stakeholders.

I also led the successful delivery of the Oryx Debottlenecking Study by rating proprietary equipment and preparing scope and cost estimates for alternatives, and co-ordinating all engineering activities between four different licensors, the owner and their appointed EC. I was pleased to have completed an engineering proposal for a Primary Distillation and an Alcohol Recovery unit worth ±$400 million. The role also involved scoping facilities for de-bottlenecking existing chemical units to accommodate 39PJ/a Growth worth ±$47 million, as well as ensuring the alignment of team objectives with the requirements of internal and external stakeholders, and across internal and external functional, organisational and country boundaries to ensure successful delivery of projects. I coached a junior process team in the delivery of a Preliminary Engineering Proposal of an excellent technical quality, taking account of both new equipment and de-bottlenecking options, and finally I developed and oversaw the project’s technical execution plan and all process engineering activities, including ensuring the quality management of all process deliverables, in order to successfully complete Front End Loading.

I directed the Solvents de-bottlenecking program in order to maximize the recovery of all solvents and increased the capacity of the existing towers by 18%. To provide technical expertise to production units, I aligned resources across functional boundaries, and defined the baseline of existing operations and identified projects to improve plant health and reliability. It was my responsibility to assess opportunities for improving the profitability of the existing production units, as well as managing engineering contractors, licensors and providers of specialized equipment and services, and assured the quality of engineering packages delivered by Sasol Technology and other contractors. In order to resolve freeze-up problems on the Ethylene Unit cold-side, I developed and rolled out a unique and innovative application of capillary level transmitters, and this application was subsequently adapted as standard practice at the Lake Charles complex. More generally, I provided operational technical support, including advising on the investigation and resolution of SHE incidents. I also delivered conceptual and basic engineering of the various small projects being implemented on the unit, ranging from steam tracing to the upgrading and de-bottlenecking of a nitrogen supply system to regenerate acetylene converters.
