It Takes A Village - Mom FriendsFounder & Community Manager
Jan. 2023Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa · RemoteIn 2020, I became a first time mom. An already scary and daunting task made even more so due to COVID and the lockdown restrictions. The isolation and lack of support was indescribable but I managed to make two mom-friends via a WhatsApp chat. A virtual friendship was made and overnight I had a Village of moms right at my fingertips, getting me through every sleepless night, feeding struggle and “is this normal” question. It was out of this that “It Takes A Village” was created. This is a community of approximately 190 moms, residing in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. Originally created via WhatsApp with just a handful of moms, this community has grown by Word-of Mouth. With their permission, I have collected information from each member about what stage of motherhood they are in and what support they need. I then match them with other moms of a similar background, and watch from the sidelines as each new friendship and “momraderie” blossoms. I also arrange and host in-person meet-ups , with our largest being approximately 40 attendees. For now, this is my passion project. It is my dream to turn it into something much bigger that extends beyond Cape Town, but for now my heart is full knowing that I have made and continue making a difference in a fellow mother’s life. It takes a village after all.
