Aug. 2025Chicago, ILIndependent consultancy specializing in Azure cloud architecture, cybersecurity strategy, and infrastructure modernization for mid-market and enterprise clients. Built secure lab environments simulating enterprise Azure and Entra ID deployments — including Sentinel integration, governance policy frameworks, and CI/CD security validation — maintaining hands-on currency across rapidly evolving cloud and security platforms. Apr. 2017 - Aug. 2025Chicago, ILBrought in as a 3-month consultant to fix a broken network. Did the job well enough that they restructured around the engagement, replaced the existing Senior Network Engineer, and kept me for eight years. During that time I was one of two Global Administrators for the entire Azure environment and the sole authorized creator of Azure resources for 4-5 years. Built Azure from zero to $100,000 monthly OpEx — 250+ App Services, multiple regions, Service Fabric, APIM, ExpressRoute, NVAs, and more. Later independently collapsed 30 subscriptions to 6, migrated 30 VPN connections to ExpressRoute, and reduced the external IP footprint from hundreds to one. Managed dual-site VMware infrastructure — 5 UCS chassis, ~32 blades, 550+ virtual servers across colocation and on-premises. Self-taught Check Point NGFW after a 20-year gap, Ping Identity on RHEL from scratch, and executed a solo QRadar-to-Sentinel migration — engineering a Squid Proxy solution to control ingestion costs without losing visibility. Managed Microsoft Defender evolution from endpoint through full XDR suite. Led complete Willis Tower headquarters buildout — full floor, 400 users, single weekend cutover. A year later when flooding took the building offline, intimate knowledge of that infrastructure enabled emergency workarounds that restored operations before the building reopened. Navigated three major crises: CDN vendor bankruptcy with 30-day migration window, Willis Tower flood, and COVID-19 remote access expansion — delivering continuity under pressure each time.

Emerging Technologies Engineer
Anixter | SBC Datacom | AT&TEmerging Technologies Engineer
Jan. 1997 - Dec. 2004Arlington Heights, ILSeven years leading enterprise LAN/WAN implementations, Cisco Unified Communications deployments, and security integrations across major Chicago-area and national enterprise clients. Earned CCNA, CCNP, CCSP, and CCIE No. 6757 during this period while executing production-level engagements. Implemented 100+ Microsoft environments including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Exchange, and MSSQL. Repeatedly trusted with first-of-kind deployments where no precedent existed: Cray Research (Eden Prairie, MN & Chippewa Falls, WI) — Major role in one of the first Cisco CallManager 3.0 deployments nationally. 600 endpoints across two facilities immediately post-Cisco acquisition of Selsius. No established TAC support or precedent at the time. VA Medical Center (Chicago) — Performed the first known Cisco ICS 7750 version 1 to version 2 replacement nationally. Active federal healthcare environment, two-week window, no established procedure. Complexity elevated by a difficult backup extraction from the legacy system requiring real-time problem solving. ICS 7750 Pioneer — Among the first to deploy Cisco ICS 7750 IP Telephony blade server technology nationally. Super Bowl XXXIV (Atlanta, January 2000) — Selected as backup infrastructure engineer for live event operations. Required rapid mastery of Alcatel-Xylan proprietary switching architecture to ensure readiness for contingency support. Y2K Remediation — Infrastructure audits and firmware compliance upgrades across dozens of enterprise client engagements under hard calendar deadline. Multi-vendor depth across Cisco, Bay Networks/Nortel, Fore Systems, Alcatel-Xylan, Ascend, 3Com, and HP. Installed HP OpenView, CiscoWorks, and SolarWinds network management platforms.
Circuit Activation & Implementation Engineer
UUNETCircuit Activation & Implementation Engineer
Jan. 1996 - Dec. 1997Fairfax, VAJoined UUNet during the explosive early growth of commercial internet infrastructure — part of a field team building out backbone capacity for AOL and MSN networks at a time when dial-up internet was scaling from thousands to tens of millions of users nationwide. Built out three major internet infrastructure sites across New York, Dallas, and San Francisco — each approximately 2 rows of 10 racks supporting 20,000-30,000 simultaneous connections. Managed full deployment lifecycle from unboxing through turnup — racking, wiring, connecting, testing, and activating Cisco 7500 series routers and Ascend Max TNT remote access servers. Among the first Ascend Max TNT deployments in the country. Activated DS1 and DS3 circuits for AOL and MSN — the primary internet service providers serving millions of subscribers during the formative era of commercial internet. On a single New Year's Eve push to meet year-end targets, activated 500 T1 circuits across multiple sites — working through midnight to deliver against a hard deadline.
