I had always listened to accomplished individuals or "Titans of Industry" speak of altruism as if it were some distant and unattainable goal, but it really isn't that hard once you find your passion(s). So why not share your journey with others and help them find theirs. One thing I hadn't expected when becoming a mentor is how much I personally and professionally benefitted from the experience. Many of the students are from Latin America and many need some additional guidance in preparing to enter the workforce in the US, which is often times very different than their home country's economy. I spend a majority of my time assisting students with preparing resumes, creating or editing LinkedIn profiles, conducting mock interviews with them, and helping them build their network of contacts with the business community. I am thankful everyday that I have this opportunity. Had I not taken advantage of this opportunity, I may have never realized how much I have to give back to Houston and the University and how much both of them have contributed to the person I am today.
