This multi-million euro project involves all of Ireland's 32 local authorities and is aimed at ensuring the efficient management of landfill gas and the protection of surface and groundwater against pollution from landfill leachate migration. General focus is to continually develop, implement and evaluate systems and processes which deliver high quality licensing of industrial installations and waste facilities in line with provisions of both European Union and Irish legislation.

The review was used to optimise processes that treat waste so as to reduce its volume and hazard, whilst capturing (and thus concentrating) or destroying potentially harmful substances. It is envisaged that the incineration process should provide a means to enable recovery of energy, mineral and/or chemical content from waste.
