Jan. 2025Nairobi County, Kenya🚀 Shaping Africa’s AI Future: Empowering Policymakers for Impact AI has the potential to transform governance, healthcare, education, agriculture, and economies across Africa—but only if policymakers are equipped to drive responsible adoption. As Policy Lead for the Gates-funded Africa AI Project at Qhala Trust, I am working to enhance AI literacy among policymakers in Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, South Africa, Nigeria, and Senegal. Through the AI Master Class, we are equipping leaders with the knowledge and tools to develop forward-thinking AI policies that foster sustainable development. A critical part of my role involves government relations and capacity building, actively engaging governments, legislators, and regulatory bodies to educate policymakers on AI and empower them to prioritize AI-driven policies that enhance economic growth and establish regulatory frameworks at the right time. I am also championing the need for African data that speaks to Africa, ensuring AI systems are trained on datasets that reflect our cultures, realities, and languages. This includes advocating for AI solutions in African languages to make AI more inclusive and aligned with local needs. Additionally, I am leading efforts to ensure full attendance at Africa’s ICT Ministerial Roundtables, fostering cross-border AI policy collaboration. We are developing actionable recommendations for responsible AI adoption and establishing an AI progress tracker to systematically monitor policy implementation and impact across the continent. A key initiative is the AI Council for Africa, which will set the strategic direction for AI, mobilize funding, and advocate for inclusive AI policies while ensuring Africa’s priorities are represented globally. I am in the team drafting the Charter of the AI Council for Africa that is presented to ICT Ministers as a key resolution. Excited to be part of this transformative journey—let’s connect and shape Africa’s AI future! 🌍✨
