Jan. 2016 - Feb. 2023Fredericksburg, Virginia, United StatesTeaching students from diverse backgrounds and different learning needs lead me to restructure the entire makeup of my classroom. I removed the desks and brought in tables, chairs, floor pillows, rugs and decor that gave the appearance and feel of a cozy cafe rather than a sterile classroom. Students were encouraged to learn freely in the environment. I changed the model of teaching from dictation- memorization- regurgitation to Discovery Learning, increasing engagement, confidence and and most of all positive attitude. Students learned more, participated more and were genuinely happy to be in my classroom. By focusing on the whole student, I was able to meet each child where they were, and assess their individual learning needs, creating learning sessions utilizing strategies that set them up for success. My classroom was always about more than the content, it was about creating Good Humans who become responsible life long learners. Note taking, study, and organizational skills are the top strategies all learners need, along with time management and communication. Setting a Mind Set of positivity and confidence caused my students to score higher than their peers on county and state mandated tests. I participated in a Teacher Leader Program of other innovative teachers in my county, collaborating together to change the focus of all classrooms to student centered learning from content focused learning. Together we wrote a standard that was implemented countywide. My students have gone on to graduate high school, and have been successful in their lives whether they chose to attend Universities or enter the work force. The strategies they learned while in my class have had a lasting effect on their lives
