Mar. 2014 - Dec. 2023United StatesIn 2014 I saw that the majority of the breast cancer survivors I met in support groups were incredibly unhappy in their post-breast cancer treatment skin. But I was SO happy, what was the difference? I had used hobby modelling as a way of seeing myself as beautiful after treatment. So my husband and I came up with a model where I styled young breast cancer survivors as pinup models and my husband found classic cars for them to pose with. We got photographers to volunteer their time to photograph them. We took the photos and made them into a beautiful wall art calendar that we sold through our non-profit. At first getting our non-profit status was difficult, they didn't understand why we were doing what we did, how it was important and why we were a non-profit.
As the years passed on the calendar became very popular and more people than we could accommodate wished to participate! Though our social media branding of inclusion and exception we were approached by USC to become a community advocate. From there I was approached by The CBCRP to be trained as a community outreach researcher. I was trained for 9 months on disparities, ethics and grant writing. It was part of the curriculum to develop a field of study, which I found no previous study information on. That being Breast Cancer and the effects of exercise on body image and quality of life. I needed to find a researcher at a UC who was in a field that applied and who was willing to participate. That was Sheri Hartman of UCSD. Together we wrote a study and I believe we were the only group that year to have our pilot study funded. It ran from 2019 - 2020. It's currently been picked up by another researcher to do a full study.
I have had countless opportunities to speak, advocate and move the lives of young people effected by breast cancer. It's one of my proudest accomplishments.
