Feb. 2021 - Feb. 2022Barcelona1/3 food is wasted yearly, and 6-8% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced if we stop wasting food. 4-8% of produce is wasted at an early stage (farms), due to quality parameters (aesthetic malformation, sizes, wounds) or low rentability. I wanted to do something about it. That’s how Ugly is Cool was born: to help reduce food waste that takes place at the beginning of the food value chain, with the purpose of helping the world be a better place to live. After many iterations of the original idea, I decided to launch a DTC brand - with a subscription business model. I would gather food that producers would through away (because they had overproduction or because they were visually imperfect), put them into boxes, and send them out to final consumers. I had the privilege to be selected by Esade Creapolis to be part of their Esade Empenta program, and by Barcelona Activa and Mercabarna to join their Innofood program. I did a deep dive into the food industry, talking to farmers and business owners, and joining farmers during harvest time. It was important to build a strong brand that could emotionally resonate with the target and to build a community around the food waste movement. Education was key. I launched a test with potential consumers to understand if this could fit a market need. I was in charge of purchasing, operations, logistics, marketing, communications… What a time! After analyzing the business model and the market, I realized that I was not going to have any competitive advantage and there were no strong entry barriers - as long as I wanted to stay true to my original purpose of reducing food waste. So I decided to take all the learnings with me and start a new adventure. I would do everything I did again, it was absolutely worth it - I would just do it faster and more efficiently now!
