Jul. 2014 - Jun. 2015Bronx, New York, United StatesTaught dance fundamentals to preschoolers (ages 3-5) while exposing these young minds to a variety of music and dance styles. Prepared children to perform an original dance piece before an audience of their parents, teachers, and peers at year-end ceremony.
* Music played during warm-up and lessons: Classical, Reggae, Motown “oldies,” Hawaiian/Slack Key Guitar, Jazz, Instrumental/Body Percussion (e.g. Bobby McFerrin), and uplifting and age-appropriate contemporary Pop. Dance and movement styles explored: Ballet, Salsa, traditional West African, line dances (The Hustle, Electric Slide), Yoga, and partner stretching.
* Used movement to embody and thereby reinforce a lesson they were learning in class or had recently just learned (e.g. seasonal changes)
* Fostered confidence in preschoolers’ bodily expression and movement choices by encouraging them, to the degree they felt comfortable, to take turns freestyling in the center of a circle or leading warm-up
