E. & J. Gallo WineryPrincipal - Statistics
Apr. 2021 - Sep. 2023Modesto, California, United States• Managed a team of 5 statisticians in support of technical and foundational research across viticulture, chemistry, enology, sensory analysis and process technology
• Managed field projects in multiple vineyards to quantify the effects of micro-climate, meso-climate and management practices on grape quality, yield and profit
• Used approximate Bayesian computation, (ABC) to determine levels of compounds in a liquid with an extremely small sample size • Implemented precision agriculture analysis of vineyards in several different AVA's resulting in higher quality grapes and less water usage
• Statistical support of a wide variety of research projects ranging from agriculture to consumer insight using random forests, universal kriging, machine learning, mixed effects models, ArcGIS and open-source GIS programs
• Analyzed gene expression data, such as mRNA sequencing and microarrays using R and parallel processing on Netezza to adjust irrigation and vineyard practices to aid in increasing quality and profitability
• Modeled climate, soil and management practices as drivers of grape quality and yield using ESRI and open-source GIS resulting in actionable suggestions to reduce cost and maintain grape quality
• Developed novel machine learning algorithms to analyze historic non-disparate chemistry data and infer relationships to human sensory, taste, aroma and mouthfeel
• Compiled, analyzed and reported on large environmental data sets and the effects of climate and soil on Rubired Grape yield and quality, allowing the winery to make business decisions several months earlier
