Jan. 2021 - Mar. 2025Somerville, Massachusetts, United StatesIn my role as Lead Visualization Engineer at Cellarity, I conducted strategic workshops to outline data exploration tool needs, and translated findings into technical requirements. I designed UI for tools with connections to machine learning models, created visualizations of predictions, and led the implementation of browser-based applications with React frontend and Python backend. These tools allow biologists to explore and analyze high-dimensional transcriptional data without having to write code, help organize and find data, and aid in the decision-making process for finding new therapeutic focus areas. I created visuals for the website, investor presentations, and conferences to help communicate the science at Cellarity.

Jul. 2018 - Jan. 2021Islesboro, MEMy skills in data visualization, user experience design, user interface and interaction design are based on a solid foundation in graphic design and my love for communicating science. Key projects: • GenomeDiver (Icahn School of Medicine, Mt. Sinai) — UX/UI design for a clinical application to improve diagnostic rates in whole genome genetic testing by opening a communication channel for clinicians and testing labs. • GenoCat.tools (Gehlenborg lab at Harvard Medical School) — redesigned UI and updated code base for a project cataloging hundreds of genomic visualization tools • Scientific illustrations for publications (ENCODE) and grant applications (Neville Sanjana, Tuuli Lappalainen) • Data Visualization for Genomics (University of Ireland, Galway, 2019) — taught a 1-week workshop for PhD students in genomics • Data Visualization Masterclass: Design Principles (2020, 2022, 2023)

Jul. 2015 - Sep. 2019New York CityAt NYGC, where I worked in the data innovation group, I designed and built tools for research and clinical applications. As a designer, my role was to capture the scientific requirements of a project and translate them into visualizations that help the users; design a user experience and user interfaces that make the data explorable, relatable, and actionable; design and code prototypes that serve as a proof of concept; and help break down and translate the requirements in terms that software engineers understand. I designed MetroNome, a visual exploration environment for genomic and clinical data.

Feb. 2012 - Jun. 2015North Ryde, NSWVisualizing biological data was at the centre of my work: I designed and programmed user interfaces for bioinformatics and structural biology tools in the group of Sean O'Donoghue (www.odonoghuelab.org). We collaborated with scientists at CSIRO and the Garvan Institute in Sydney, as well as researchers in Munich, Lisbon, and Kopenhagen. I served as art director and designer for animations about cutting-edge biological discoveries, created as part of the VizbiPlus project (http://vizbi.org/plus). I acted as co-organizer of the VIZBI conference series (Visualizing Biological Information, http://vizbi.org) and chair for the VIZBI art & biology events.
