Waverley Cameron plcFinancial Controller and Company Secretary
Jan. 1990 - Sep. 1992London, United KingdomI started off as the assistant to the financial controller at the Head Office of this diverse group of companies preparing consolidated accounts, and managing the cash deposits. Due to the sudden unexpected death of the Financial Controller I was asked after only 6 months in the company and at age 29 if I would take on his role, which I agreed to. This meant I sat on the plc Board, I visited banks with the Chairman to argue for more liquidity funding. I negotiated settlements with suppliers, the taxman, employees. I also prepared consolidated monthly and annual financial reports for this company and acted as Company Secretary. I liaised with external auditors, and filed all company reporting requirements. I had one immediate member of staff, and 5 companies reporting in to me. The company struggled in the financial crises of the late 80s, and I think we might be the only company to survive having half of the company go bankrupt due to our major bank withdrawing our line of credit immediately after the Christmas period when our retail operation had made a lot of money! Luckily we had two banks supporting two sides of the business. We successfully found a buyer for the remaining businesses and I was then promptly made redundant.
