Apr. 2016Clover, SCI've become more selective in the projects I take on as I have advanced in my design career. Current projects involve advising on function as much as form. I provide high-level UX and Web design services including requirements gathering, content inventory, information architecture, content strategy, content generation and optimization, front end development, and user interface design to an active roster of loyal clients. Design solutions range from print and marketing collateral to web and digital design, to training, mentoring, and coaching.

Aug. 2015Charlotte, North CarolinaMy work as adjunct faculty and as the College Web Designer along with my traditional design experience and related degrees has culminated in a full-time teaching role within the Graphic Design program as the resident web and technology evangelist for the program. During my time here, I have added Web and UX to the curriculum, resulting in job placements for our alumni in rapidly-growing areas of the field. I've also spearheaded improvements to our technical training, producing graduates with strong software proficiencies, especially in Adobe products and web design tools, and produced coursework for traditional design classes that has been adopted by my colleagues and counterparts across the NC Community College System. In addition, I have collaborated with my counterparts at other colleges within the state to create the NC Advertising and Graphic Design Association, an organization comprised of faculty within design programs throughout the state, and served on the Executive Board for the first four years. I regularly present at conferences and advise on updates to the program curriculum. Prior to the formation of the AGDA, I have also recognized the need for a dedicated UX program, then collaborated with faculty at a sister college and industry professionals to create a UX program which has been integrated into the available programs within the NC Community College System. I have served as one of the first four Faculty Fellows at the College, lending my design skills and technological expertise to develop resources, training materials, and mentorship programs for all college faculty, and served as a "first responder" during the transition to remote teaching in 2020 and following a total system loss in 2021. I enjoy improving processes and systems within the organizations I serve, regardless of my job title. In short, it's what I do: I teach people and I know things.

Feb. 2013 - Jul. 2015Charlotte, North CarolinaWhen I joined the staff of the Web Development Team, I noticed two areas that needed improvement: the documentation of our web standards and the communication between IT and Marketing/Communications. I took both challenges on as side projects as I worked to make the college website responsive and designed high-fidelity, interactive wireframes for much-needed supplements to our primary website, including a course registration product and a mobile-first college directory. I also regularly reviewed analytics, pulled reports, advised on content strategy, assisted internal clients with design, copywriting, and information architecture, and developed training for web content managers within the organization. By the time I left my position, communication between IT and Marketing/Communications had improved to the point that they worked together to create a new role to oversee digital strategy, and the documentation I created on content strategy formed the basis of the initial strategy. I met with the first officers of the new office as I settled into my next role to offer insights and context at their request.

Jan. 2012 - Dec. 2015Charlotte, North CarolinaWhen I agreed to lead the web development tools course, the coursework focused exclusively on Dreamweaver. I redesigned the course to encompass full-cycle website development including hosting, domain registration, productivity tools, sitemaps, wireframes, technical documentation, time-tracking, image optimization, native animation options, PHP, in-browser development tools, cross-platform testing, and debugging, as well as use of IDEs and code editors. I leveraged my design skills to educate students on design theory, and taught design students how to code. I learned two different learning management systems (LMSs) with no formal training, and learned to navigate the college infrastructure with no formal orientation.

Jun. 2006 - Feb. 2010Charlotte, NCMy time at Baker & Taylor afforded me many opportunities to interface with many levels of leadership, from sales staff in Texas all the way up to the Chief Marketing Officer at corporate headquarters. At first, my primary function was the design of printed marketing materials, such as catalogs, brochures, and trade show booth graphics, but I ultimately served in the capacity of a creative technologist. I experienced several departmental restructurings while I was there, and I survived all of them because of my fearless approach to learning new things. For example, I learned HTML/CSS on my lunch breaks one week so that I could translate the catalogs I created in InDesign into HTML emails. I collaborated with a third-party vendor to create a website that would allow our customers (mostly bookstores) to customize the marketing materials that I designed for Baker & Taylor so that they could use them to market to their customers. Our clients began to request the same for our emails, and I ultimately devised a reliable solution to allow sales reps to gather information from their customers using spreadsheets to upload on behalf of each customer. I traveled to Texas to facilitate a training workshop for the sales staff. We had a separate third-party platform for e-commerce. I devised a solution to build unique web URLs for each customer that also had to reconcile inconsistent path structures in our ecommerce platform. The challenges that I worked to solve during my time at Baker & Taylor have shaped the trajectory of my career in many ways.
