Oct. 2017Pretoria Area, South AfricaAMIRA OMER SIDDIG OSMAN is a Sudanese/South African architect/lecturer/researcher. She is a professor of architecture at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and is the SARChI Chair in Spatial Transformation. Amira is running the professional master’s programme at the TUT Architecture Department. She is also working on a research project titled “Harnessing innovation in the service of sustainable human settlements: continued explorations into the 4th dimension in design and technical decision-making in the South African residential sector” Amira believes that the architectural profession has a critical role to play in the achievement of human settlements that are more equitable, more beautiful and more functional – human settlements that increase opportunities, offering people a better chance at improving their lives and livelihoods. The belief that the profession has the potential to offer both technical and social expertise towards these aims is the driving force behind Amira’s research projects and in her professional roles.
General Reporter
UIA 2014 DurbanGeneral Reporter
Aug. 2013 - Aug. 2014DurbanAmira served as General Reporter and headed the Scientific Committee for the UIA 2014 Congress in Durban. From the 3rd – 7th August 2014 Durban hosted the International Union of Architects Congress. UIA 2014 Durban received over 4000 delegates from over 100 countries. The Scientific Committee was tasked with setting the themes for the event, establishing partnerships, managing the academic paper process and international student competition, keynote speakers as well as the programme. The UIA 2014 Durban Scientific Committee (SC) received over 500 abstract submissions, from 61 countries. 300 were accepted for publication in the abstract book and for presentation and 200 full papers are published in the proceedings. This process was supported by an international panel of 87 reviewers. The SC managed over 500 registrations from 51 countries for the UIA 2014 Durban International Student Competition – 165 entries were adjudicated by an international jury panel. The competition was instrumental to furthering the intentions of the Congress and the 15 shortlisted entries were exhibited at the event and selected projects (which received mentions) were exhibited at a venue at Warwick in central Durban. The Scientific Committee also produced a number of digital and printed publications: the Official Congress Programme Book, the Abstract Book, the Proceedings Book, the Special Publications Book, the Student Competition Book and the Practice Posters Book. The feedback on UIA 2014 Durban has been incredibly positive and it is obvious that the approach and outcomes have resonated with the delegates and the public, with many believing that UIA 2014 Durban has set a new precedent for UIA Congresses going forward.
