Aug. 2019 - May. 2021Initially a freelancer but during SARS-COV-2 pandemic was retained as employed status to maintain my residency in Spain. I was the only retained developer during a skeleton development period whereby the product was a few months away from planned go-live. Due to the pandemic and release of the team I took on the responsibility to get the product production ready extremely quickly. I worked as the sole developer and produced awesome code to release as early as possible, for which I gained great recognition from the corporate stakeholders. I delivered without guidance or support in the crisis, to make the system work the way I envisioned it, with amazing results. I reduced minutes of data retrieval / computing to milliseconds making an MVP, a production ready product. The system aided engineering and hardware teams to remotely monitor PCR automated robotic labs, without the need for engineers to travel or attend on-site technical / hardware support - critical during the SARS-COV-2 lockdowns. I was retained as a developer during the rollout of the first phase during the pandemic and for the expansion to phase 2 and proudly recognised as key to the success of both phases of the project and even recognised as the individual who saved the project.

I built key processing layers that consumed and processed vast amounts of data to compute the bank's global VaR, market risk and credit risk in trillions of CHF, in real-time and applying the greeks to deliver meaningful metrics and reliable risk measurements. The user base consisted of the board of executives of the bank, risk managers and global trading desk heads - the software facilitated informed decisions based on the risk regulations and appetite for risk within the banks guidelines. The software greatly contributed to the recovery of the banks' reputation following a well documented breach in protocol, ensuring it would not be possible for undetected irregularities in trading to ever occur without detection. The bank gained positive recognition and recovered its reputation for the extensive controls and use of technology, for which this project was directly attributed.

I built network middleware to communicate with legacy mainframe systems over ssh and Sun Unix providing output that could be consumed by modern languages. I created unmanaged C# libraries that exposed both managed .Net and legacy COM interop interfaces to enable consumption by various tools and applications to help the global swaps team of different aptitudes and job function access the data easily. Full traceability including the conversion of ANSI and ASCII and numeric big-little endian conversion was required by traders at each step. The desks and accountants used Excel as their primary tool. Having built much of the algorithmic trading tools for ML previously I would have liked to build a far more user friendly system but this was not in the scope of this project. I did not agree with the approach taken and it was agreed that I was more suited to building solutions in more cutting edge areas of financial services. The trust in software and manpower required to verify something I automated seemed a bit crazy. (They did use my libraries though, to do everything manually!)

Created SSAS Cubes and reports to help interpret low level kernel logs, Platform Symphony controllers, work items, mathematical processes, CPU and node usage and identify both minimum and maximum utilisation scenarios. (I also overheated two of the machines I used for the data analysis but the data retrieved was absolutely vital - unfortunately the machines were under my desk and I wondered why I felt very warm at times)

I am still in touch with my old colleagues and management who did warn me that life as a developer with my creativity and determination would not always be very easy!!!
