Aug. 2011 - Jul. 2017* Leading experimental research and development in experimental television white spaces (TVWS). I led and/or advised in/provided training for the TVWS trials which provided Internet to over 20,000 users, influenced FCC (USA) regulations in TVWS and led to setting up national South African TVWS regulations. * Leading the experimental research in smart and ultra-low power antennas and energy efficiency (1 mW power-saving array antenna tech. demo), spectrum management and wireless, compatibility studies, as well as performing research in passive radars, digital television broadcasting and broadband convergence. -- 2 awards incl. Best paper award; -- 4 technology demonstrators, 1 US patent, 2 book chapters, standard, 2 journal, 35 conference and 11 popular articles; -- representation in several national/governmental and international forums;
-- multiple invited talks (incl. international), and tutorials; -- roles of conference General Chair, journal Editor;
-- organizing several international conferences and numerous talks with international speakers;
-- participation in IEEE standardization activities; * Consultative work around WiFi-based mesh networks for mines (Anglo American). The activities also extend to the supervision of graduate students, mentoring junior staff, collaboration with universities, acting manager duties, contributions to CSIR's organizational developments (career ladder, conditions of service, ...), plus employment of staff, full project planning, proposals preparation etc.
