As a co-chair I was instrumental in the organization and execution of the 1st annual Tallahassee “Change a Light for Daylight Saving” Campaign on March 11, 2007. This community wide environmental awareness event with the City of Tallahassee distributed Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs in the surrounding Florida A&M University campus community. Volunteers identified, canvassed, and completed door- to -door distribution of over 2,500 CFL light bulbs in this highly successful event. The “Change a Light for Daylight Saving” event received a “Promising Practice” award from the Council for a Sustainable Florida and a “Golden Image” award from the Florida Public Relations Association. Under my tenure the FGC led FAMU to defeat Florida State University in the first-ever Campus CANpaign Challenge in October 2007, in which FAMU organizations collected more aluminum cans than did our FSU neighbors. In addition in January 2008, along with the Environmental Sciences Student Organization, the Coalition co-hosted the "Focus the Nation" teach-in on global warming solutions. And thanks to our efforts prompted the University’s President, Dr. James Ammons, to establish the FAMU Environment and Sustainability Council in Spring 2008.
