May. 2019 - Mar. 2020Lake Elsinore, CaliforniaAs the main CAD Designer/Creative Engineer for Storyland Studios, I worked on myriad projects, from the tiny to the humongous, creating steel structures for giant dragons, to R&D and implementing animated eyes for Dr. Seuss's beloved Sneetches. When not figuring out how to turn ideas into reality on the computer, using Fusion360 or Rhino, I was out in the shop running CNC machines from Shopbots to Gerbers to Lasers, cutting, glueing, sanding, sculpting, and painting to bring those things on the screen to life.

UI/UX Designer - Contract
Hewlett-PackardUI/UX Designer - Contract
Apr. 2015 - Sep. 2015Greater San Diego AreaThis was an interesting project, as I was hired to redesign the UI and UX for HP's Windows version of their All in One remote app so it would work with Windows 10. The interesting, and probably most challenging part of this assignment was that there wasn't a lot of documentation available from MS yet, as well as the fact none of the developers on the team had any experience programming for Win10 - mainly because the OS wasn't due to be released until months later, and MS didn't provide betas or coding samples to HP (for some strange reason I don't even understand). It took a lot of research, and emails to the designers at MS on my part to learn about what they called "Responsive Design" and how it worked in their environment - being that the idea behind Win10 was you only had to code once and then it would magically work on any screen size, from desktop to phone. I then had to show and teach the developers at HP how this was all supposed to work, and designed wireframes for the different UI's in the app as to how it should look at those different screen layouts. I also ended up producing new visual elements that were designed to work in the Windows10 schema. An interesting project to say the least.
UX Consultant
Brain CorporationUX Consultant
Oct. 2014 - Mar. 2015Greater San Diego AreaI worked on making the most difficult thing about robotics - programming; and making it simple and intuitive enough that anyone can build or have their own learning robot with no programming experience at all. The idea was to make robots easy to train so that they could be more ubiquitous in the household. I also worked on several product ideas while there - one being a robot that picks up stuff around the house (and even can make it a game with the owner's children), semi-autonomous cars, and the learning smart home - with the ability to communicate with the intelligent car. I wrote a couple "Day in the Life" stories for the robot as well as connected car and home, which you can see here.

Applied MindsUX/UI Ideation and Inventor
Jan. 2013 - May. 2013Greater Los Angeles AreaThere's not much I can say about working at Applied Minds, because I nor anyone else that works or worked there can, aside from being hired to do UX for a lot of really cool new things, alongside some of the brightest and nicest people I got to work with. One co-worker from Trapster summed up Applied Minds as "The A Team of the R&D world". I did some cool stuff for social media, videoconferencing, and the web that will someday change the world and how we do things now.

TrapsterUX/UI Designer (contract)- iOS/Android
Aug. 2012 - Jan. 2013Greater San Diego AreaFor a short while I got to work with an interesting and amazing group of folks on an app called "Trapster". That app was made to help you find your way as well as know when police were nearby so you could be a safer driver.. During that time, I worked as the UX/UI designer for the Android version of the app, but eventually worked on new features for both that and the iOS versions. I developed concepts and designs for: social media within the app, including a cool new feature I called "Roadtrip Postcards" - which never got implemented. I also worked on adding gamification and a rewards system, premium themes based on television, movies and classic cars and the idea of in-app purchases vs. game point rewards Having the idea of providing themes based on movies and TV, I took on the responsibility for all licensing talks with major studios including Universal, Disney, Lucasfilm and the BBC, and not only made contact with all of those entities, but kept in close relation with all of them during that period. And then Applied Minds called one day...
User Experience Engineer (Contract)
nliven systemsUser Experience Engineer (Contract)
Apr. 2012 - Jul. 2012Greater San Diego AreaWhile at nLiven or Defenseweb as it was also known, I was brought on to do all the UX for a new project they were bidding to the military - a massive online enterprise web app called Military One Source. This was both a challenge (I love a good challenge by the way) and rewarding as if selected, it would provide services to thousands of US military families. The kicker, from a UX perspective, is I would never get to interview the end-users as to what they were currently using and what their pain-points were. I did get what the requirements were from the PM and Business Analyst, so the best I could do was put myself in the shoes of the end-users — call center people who didn't like what they were using currently, to the point of avoiding what they had until they had no choice. The work I did ended up winning nLiven the project over several competitors and a multimillion dollar contract to boot.
