Starting out as a DTP operator taught me how to be patient, take instructions & experience the
high level of detail in order to get a job, big or small, ready for production. Most importantly it
taught me how to craft. Craft design in art direction & writing, as well as applying art direction &
conceptual thinking to design.
The natural step was to a junior art director for boutique ad agencies with the next jump to a art
director
for the ‘bigger’ traditional ad agencies, which included Lowe Bull Calvert Pace, TBWA Hunt
Lascaris JHB & nally BBDO Cape Town, later becoming Network BBDO. The time at these
agencies a orded me the
opportunity to work with some of SA’s greatest in the ad game. Matthew Bull, Sandra De Wit,
John Hunt, Mike Schalit, Andrew Whitehouse & Justin Gomes to name a few. There are many
others not mentioning,
but never forgetting their value add.
Once my time in ad-land came to an end, I, with good friends, purchased the Vida e Ca è group,
albeit as a minority shareholder. My roll was to build the brand & roll out of stores from 5 in 2001
to almost 70 in 2010,
as the group creative & marketing director.
Upon my exit in 2010, I started Franc which serviced clients across the board in a multitude
of creative outputs, including conceptual thinking, design, brand building, communications,
product
& spatial design.
While at Franc, we set about opening one of SA’s rst ethical butchers, Frankie Fenner Meat
Merchants, based in Cape Town. As part owner of the business I help build the little shop from
the literal ground up, from store design, tone, design, build & all that goes with creating a brand.
While my time at FFMM I was lucky enough to be appointed as CD for FoxP2.2 the BTL agency to
FoxP2 under the ever inspiring Justin Gomes.
This was until I was approached to help set up North LTD as one of their creative directors &
owners, with a speci c focus on strategy, brand building, design, spatial conceptual thinking &
product design. After four years it was time to part ways & Us Folk Contextual DesiMore...
