For a quick overview of my career, the last 18 years I have spent in various engineering, development, analyst, and oversight roles, the bulk of this period I was a systems analyst for Discovery (the largest insurer in the world). They have vast engineering and IT teams with all of their systems developed in-house. As a senior system analyst, I was overseeing a few teams of engineers, being ultimately responsible for the delivery of products.
Over the years we had various successful product releases of various magnitudes with me playing the anchor role between business, project managers, and my teams of engineers - even though I was mostly supposed to play an analytical and oversight role, I was extremely hands-on, being responsible for various innovation projects and tools to increase the efficiency of our software delivery life cycle, as well as architecture directions and optimizations (we had a very strict architecture).
My core requirement was to create technical designs from business requirements, and oversee the implementation and mentoring of the engineering teams reporting to me. It seems I was made for this type of role (interfacing between technical and non-technical people, and translating requirements into system solutions). In 2017, I won a Star Award at Discovery for excellence in systems delivery and we spend 10 glorious days in Russia as our reward 😁
I always keep up (as far as I can) with the bleeding edge of the technology in our industry, which is one of the main reasons I left Discovery behind - big corporations whose core industry is not IT, are always several years behind the current state of technology - this is to ensure stability, but frustrating for people like me :)
Currently, I am working on a pure engineering project with a few other engineers (mechanical, robotics, sport science), with me being solely responsible for the high-level architecture and software development of the resultant systems.
