Former Presidency reporter Maurício Ferro is a Brazilian journalist and entrepreneur who uses audience engagement techniques to address solutions to news deserts, lack of trust, misinformation/disinformation, and news avoidance within the news outlet he founded, Correio Sabiá, the first-ever Brazilian news organization launched on WhatsApp (2018).
Supported by Internews, USAID, and the Wildlife Conservation Society, Ferro provided training for Amazonian journalists in 2024. He was also the only non-European invited to speak about creative ways to reach audiences in Bologna (Italy) in the Climate Arena 2024.
Since 2020, when he became an ICFJ media leader, Ferro has been using engaging skills to develop more media products focused on environmental and political issues—such as Electoral Pulpo, Ocean, and platō.
Correio Sabiá was selected for various national and international grants/awards, including Internews' Strengthen Amazon's Environmental Coverage (2024), providing training to other journalists in the region; ICFJ's Leap (News Innovation Lab), 2023; Earth Journalism Network's Reporting on Marine Pollution (2023); ICFJ's Fair Game (2023); Gabo Foundation's “taller” for Latin American media leaders; and Google News Initiative's Startups Lab Brazil (2022).More...
