I am passionate about Learning & Development. So passionate that I have been working in the profession for over twenty years. I spent the first ten years as a corporate trainer, working face-to-face with employees and managers and actually teaching instructor-led classes. During this time, I also was able to learn and apply adult learning principles and see first-hand how they are applied in the real world.
After learning the needs of the students, I went into instructional design. As a designer (or course creator) I create eLearning courses and so much more. Helping people learn and retain information means creating job aids, quick reference cards, manuals and even new hire guides.
When it comes to creating courses, it is important to create a course with the end-user in mind. How can I keep their attention? How much information can I infuse in this course? What can I do to help users retain this information? These are the questions I ask. The answers include gamification, real-world scenarios, mnemonic devices, and other user-involved exercises.
