Jul. 2019 - Feb. 2020Piran, SloveniaPiran, Izola, Koper and Ankaran have joined forces and are applying together as European Capital of Culture 2025! The Mayors of the four Istrian municipalities signed, on July 5, 2019, a letter of intent aimed at a joint candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2025. The four municipalities are applying under the common banner “Piran-Pirano 4 Istria 2025”. The aim is to jointly promote cultural activities within a single cross-border destination that is part of a European-wide cultural tourist offer. The European Capital of Culture is the most successful cultural initiative in the EU. The title remains extremely popular and, since 1985, it has been awarded to more than 60 cities, including Athens, Liverpool, Istanbul, Florence, Amsterdam, Linz, Wroclaw and many more.
Each year, two European cities from two different countries are awarded this title and become beacons of European cultural activity and cooperation. 2025: One city from Slovenia and one from Germany are set to be nominated as European Capitals of Culture.
