The project focuses on the colonial period and considers how colonial archives enable or inhibit our ability to create accurate representations of enslaved people by looking into specific figures during the colonial period in different countries (Guadeloupe, French Louisiana). How can archives and their silences help us re-construct the lives of the enslaved? My roles are: - Researching the enslaved woman Solitude, who participated in a maroon rebellion in Guadeloupe in 1802 while pregnant and was arrested and executed for her involvement
- Researching the enslaved woman Rosette and her master through an in-depth exploration of the Affiches Américaines (a publication dating back to the colonial era) - Using French colonial archives to research slave rebellions in Guadeloupe between 1770-1815, maroon communities, slave imprisonment and the ways in which trials and subsequent sentences were carried out. - Researching contextual data on these raw archival elements - Participating in the creation of a timeline, which involves finding relevant information on specific people, relevant documents (e.g. court transcripts), etc.
- Editing French articles being published by Professor SJ Zhang in French publications
