UBC Slam PoetryPresident
Sep. 2022 - May. 2024Vancouver, British Columbia, CanadaWhile 'Slam Poetry' might sound like just performance, being the President of UBC Slam Poetry involved far more than taking the stage. Here's what this role consisted of: - Hiring of Prospective Team Members. This portion of my position involved creating role descriptions, conducting one-on-one interviews, and facilitating onboarding between new and current team members - Coordinating Intergroup Operations. In order to create a successful event, each role within the organization needed to know what was expected of them. To ensure smooth communication, I hosted weekly meetings with the team. This included making sure the Slam Hosts were in contact with a paid poetry performers, that the Social Media team had posted about the event in due time, the Treasurers were facilitating the distribution of funds, the Chapbook team was meeting their internal deadlines for poetry submission and zine creation, and the Workshop team was working feasible theme for their upcoming session. - Hosting a Variety of Events. Not only does UBC Slam have monthly poetry sets with open mics and paid poetry features, we also had the privilege of supporting high school students in their writing endeavours. This included co-creating workshop spaces with teachers at Aldergrove Secondary School, coordinating transportation for team members, and developing scripts to guide members when leading student workshop groups ...and of course: I took on an all-hands-on-deck role during events. As President, I facilitated event setup and takedown, coordinated with paid performers, and slam-poem'd my own pieces on stage.
Climate Action Researcher
My Sea to SkyClimate Action Researcher
May. 2022 - Aug. 2023Squamish, British Columbia, CanadaAs a climate-action researcher, I was tasked with learning more about the language used around climate activism. The goal of the project was to create a better climate communication in the lower mainland. The first phase of the project involved an extensive literature review to consolidate existing research on climate-related language. I gathered data from over 30 peer-reviewed articles and studies to assess the current landscape. The next portion of the project was to bridge this knowledge into a climate-language related study. I had the privilege of collaborating with Tracey Saxby—marine biologist and founder of My Sea to Sky—and climate scientist Dr. Jiayang Zhao to design and facilitate the project. The study was structured around three primary research questions and deployed as a three-phase Qualtrics survey on Facebook. In order to test out our hypotheses, we used evidence collected in my literature refiew to create a survey made of qualitative and quantitative responses. The final drawing bridge was drawn between language and visuals; I then created 15 seperate graphics to situate the survey. After the survey experiment was completed, I performed a thorough data analysis, which included both a chi-square analysis and the interpretation and organization of individual qualitative responses. Having qualative data interpertation is highly time-consuming, and demands high perception. Many participants gave genuine answers to their questions, and each individual needed to be sorted in a category created by my interpretations of answers. Vicious cycle . The project then culminated in a comprehensive research paper that explored the key questions, findings, and implications for climate communication strategies, based on language & visuals.
