I'm a marine biologist who absolutely loves my work! I hold a master’s degree in Conservation and Use of Biodiversity, along with a Divemaster certification. I’m also National Geographic Explorer. Together with my husband, I co-manage “The Dive Shop Old Providence,” where we are passionate about marine environmental education for tourism. This year, we kicked off a community initiative focused on turtle conservation at Manzanillo Beach on Old Providence Island.We monitor and patrol the beaches during the nesting and hatching seasons, mark the turtles, and generate baseline data, aiming to contribute to the island’s turtle management plan. In the past, I've explored topics like coral genetic connectivity and marine ecology, including testing the Deep Reef Refugia Hypothesis in the Colombian Caribbean. One of my notable initiatives involved leading a red seaweed cultivation program on Old Providence Island. Through a project funded by the National Geographic Society, I had the chance to team up with fellow NGS Explorers. Together, we collaborated with local fishing communities in Colombia and Puerto Rico to develop creative sargassum-based products and technologies for cleaning and managing sargassum. I've enjoyed my journey through rural, freshwater, and marine environments, and I’m excited about the opportunity to work with international collaborators, local communities on socio-ecological projects that aim to enhance their livelihoods. Throughout these initiatives, I emphasize the importance of gender equity, traditional ecological knowledge, and sustainability.
