It provides Health Testing (eg HIV, TB, mental health, eye-testing etc); and training in Asset Based Community-driven Development. They are a committed and enthusiastic team with an excellent reputaion in our town. Jan. 2014 - Dec. 2019Previous Extended Studies students undergo mentoring training, and concurrently mentor groups of 4-6 first year ES students for their first semester. I meet with them weekly in order to create a peer community of mentors, and to deal with any challenges. I also meet with them individually at least once.

UPSTART works with pupils in the Grahamstown townships, inspiring them to write school newspapers; training them in various media; and providing extra tutoring classes every Saturday in their school subjects. I am a volunteer tutor every Saturday, and at their recent AGM, was elected onto the board. I am extremely proud of my association with UPSTART, and with the UPSTART students who are hungry to learn and to imagine a world that is better.

Acknowledging the patriarchal nature of institutions, it works to address patriarchy in institutional culture through committee work and interventions, and it is supported by the Mellon foundation to provide funding for women to attend conferences, write and publish papers, and complete their postgrad degrees.
